Domaine Bruno Dessaunay-Bissey is a tiny, traditional prodcuer located in the heart of Flagey-Echezeaux. For many years, Bruno Dessaunay sold the majority of his production to negociants such as Dominique Laurent. Today, most of the fruit used for the domaines own label. Traditional in approach, the winemaking here allows each plot to show its unique characteristics. The result is old school wines that possess sweet, concentrated fruit at their core.
Most of the domaine’s vines are located in Vosne Romanne or Flagey-Echezeaux. The premier cru Les Rouges sits just above Echezeaux and Bruno bottles a firmly structured, fragrant wine from this plot. Bigger and riper is the cuvee from the large premier cru LesBeauxMonts. The grand cru Les Grands-Echezeaux is renowned for producing many great wines, but the finest may come from the area where the vineyard meets the Clos des Vougeot and Le Musigny. Bruno’s complex, long aging Grands Echezeaux comes from 70 year vines in this prime location. This wine is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in Burgundy. The same could be said for the entire estate. Only a handful of critics have tasted in this cellar and few have reviewed the Dessaunay-Bissey wines in print. This lack of press coverage has contributed to the very reasonable prices charged by the domaine. Dessaunay-Bissey is truly under the radar, and this is certainly to the benefit of those searching for great values in the Cote de Nuits.
