Phillipe Garrey, a young winemaker from near Mercurey (Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu), is making some very nice wines. After spending time at working in Australia, Philippe returned to Burgundy in 2002 and took over his family estate. All of the domaine’s vineyards were converted to biodynamics in 2007. Philippe’s approach to winemaking emphasizes purity of fruit. The majority of the stems are removed before vinification. The Vieilles Vignes is light in color and very fragrant. Bright, red fruits dominate the nose and palate. Though not overly complex, this elegant wine is delicious. The flavors linger and entice you to try some more. I generally prefer a firmer style of wine, but this was an enjoyable bottle.
