2003 has not been my favorite vintage in Burgundy and a recent Beaune 1er Cru, Epenottes from Nicolas Potel only confirmed my opinion. The cork showed signs of leakage, but the wine did not appear to be damaged. The wine was very dark and revealed little on the nose. Most of the Burgundies I have tasted from 2003 have shown roasted/overripe flavors, but this wine avoided those characteristics. The texture, however, was coarse and void of ripe fruit. The wine was good, but not outstanding, which is disappointing considering that this vineyard is continuous to the famous Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots. 2003 is a tricky vintage that produced some outstanding wines, but also many that are one dimensional.
